So my sister has had this car for about a year in a half, and we have snow in the forecast for tomorrow.
She calls me last night and asks, "How do I put my car in 4WD? Do I just press the button and go? What if there is 10 inches in the street? How do I use it?" It was a good question because I have no idea how any of these modern trucklett AWD systems work. Are they all the time? Are they push button? Do they require the vehicle to be in park, or can it be shifted on the fly? Who the hell knows?
Often pinged with simple little questions that are covered in the owners' manual, I have a copy downloaded on both my work and home machines so I can reference it - and I did.
I sent her this last night, and said, "Page 520 in your manual. Read this page."
She replied with, "Oh wow!!! Thank you. Um. Cliff Notes?"
I replied with, "That is the cliff notes. It's only one page."

RTFM is always a good answer.

Wow....that's kind of a shitty 4WD system. :-/

Ultimate Cliff's Notes: "Do nothing unless stuck. If stuck, stop, put in 1, 2, or R, and push the button shown on p. 520. Turn it off again when on a clear road by pushing the button."

Actually a locking dif is one of the best. Plus it's automatically sends power to all wheels, much better then most trucks 4wd. I couldn't get my honda pilot stuck, but I did manage to over heat the transmission racing a land rover and lada niva up a mountain in Eastern Europe.

I wanted her to read the part about spinning your wheels and not using it on dry pavement.
I started typing out a short set of instructions, but found myself typing the other stuff out as well. By the time I realized what I was going to send her, it was 90% of what was on the page.
Read it, sis.

Oh, my Audi has a locking rear diff so I know how well those work at keeping you on to outside of ditches. I'm just talking about the torque split. I guess I'm just used to AWD that power from less grippy wheels to more grippy wheels and doesn't have to be activated to do so. The truck sounds like it just does axle-to-axle, not wheel-to-wheel.
As for the locking rear diff, I have a button just for that by the handbrake. :-)

2012 Pilot.
Damn this is frustrating. I can't really navigate Kinja today. Going to have to duck out for a while.

I saw the strangley mounted gear selector and immediatley thought of this:
We have an 07 Pilot and it is mounted on the column!

It may be only one page, but my girlfriend wouldn't get through that first sentence without a "what the hell did I just read?"
